Metabolism boosters

From Readers Digest:

12 Ways to Jump-Start Your Metabolism

from 5 Minute Health Boosters

1. Use interval training to rev up your workout.

Walk for the same amount of time at the same intensity day in and day out and your body will get as bored with your workout as you do. Throw in some variety with interval training, which involves changing the intensity of your workout throughout your exercise session. Every 5 minutes of your walk, jog for 1 minute. Every 5 minutes of your bike ride, shift into a higher gear and pedal hard for a minute. If you swim, speed up every other length. You'll burn more calories in the same amount of time.

2. Fidget.

People who drum their fingers or bounce their knees burn at least 500 calories a day. That adds up to losing 1 lb a week.

3. Keep a small squeeze ball with you and grip and squeeze it frequently during the day.

It's one of the few exercises you can do at any time. You'll build up the muscles in your hands - and muscle, wherever it is, burns a lot of calories.

4. Don't starve yourself.

Cutting out too many calories can backfire in more ways than one. Try to subsist on morsels and your metabolism will slow down so much that you'll not only stop losing weight, but you'll be lucky if you can peel yourself off the couch.

5. Put five rubber bands around your wrist every morning.

That's how many 16-ounce bottles of water you should drink during the day to rev up your metabolism, helping to burn more calories. At least, that's what German researchers found when they got 14 participants to drink about 500 ml of water. The volunteers' metabolic rate - or how quickly they burned calories - jumped a third within 10 minutes of drinking the water and remained high for another 30 or 40 minutes. The researchers estimated that, over a year, increasing your water consumption by 1.5 litres a day would burn an extra 17,400 calories, or about 2.25 kg (5 lb) worth. Since much of the increased metabolic rate is due to the body's efforts to heat the liquid, make sure the water you're drinking is icy cold.

6. Turn up the heat with hot peppers.

Some studies show that very spicy foods can temporarily increase your metabolism. Specialist grocers often stock many different kinds of peppers. Buy one type a week and add some to various meals. Spice up your scrambled eggs with minced jalapeño, add a little fire to beef stew with half a Scotch bonnet pepper.

7. Exercise outside.

Maybe it's the fresh air, maybe it's the sunshine, but something about exercising out in the open makes you walk or run faster than doing the same exercise in the gym.

8. Eat five small meals throughout the day instead of three large meals.

You might think you should eat less often if you want to lose weight, but that's just not the case. By eating every few hours, you keep your metabolism fired up and ensure it doesn't slow down between meals in order to hang on to calories. A 'meal' can be as small as a cup of soup.

9. Sip a couple of cups of coffee throughout the day.

Studies find that the caffeine in coffee increases the rate at which your body burns calories. This does not mean, however, that you should order a fancy calorie-packed frappuccino. And skip the espresso if it makes you toss and turn at night.

10. Don't worry if you've been yo-yo dieting.

There's a myth that if you've spent your life losing and gaining the same 10 to 20 lb, your metabolism gets out of kilter and ends up slowing right down. Don't believe it. When researchers reviewed 43 studies on the topic, they found no difference in the metabolic rates of yo-yo dieters compared to those of everyone else.

11. Walk with intent - and intensity.

Burn more calories in the same amount of time with these strategies:
1. Swing your arms when you walk. You'll burn 5 to 10 per cent more calories.
2. Wear a weighted vest - another great way to burn calories. But leave the hand and ankle weights at home. They throw you off balance and could result in injury.
3. Walk on grass, sand or a gravel path instead of the road. It takes more muscle power to glide smoothly over these uneven surfaces (especially sand) than over asphalt.
4. Use walking poles. A U.S. study found that you get a much more intense workout than you would without the poles.
5. Walk along the shore of a river or lake with your ankles in the water. The resistance burns more calories and gives your muscles an added workout.

12. Increase the protein in your diet.

There is some evidence that if you increase your protein intake to the upper end of the recommended range (roughly 20 per cent of overall calories), the amount of energy you expend at rest will remain the same even while you're losing weight. Normally, as you lose weight, your body adjusts and you burn fewer calories at rest.

Scanner

I've used a ton of scanners in the past and this one beats them all. I would so love to not have the bulkiness of a scanner. Can't wait until it comes out. Which will be....?

From the Technabob blog:

LG Crams a Scanner Into Their Smart Scan Mouse

Posted: 04 Sep 2011 06:00 AM PDT

The computer mouse has received quite a lot of attention in the past few months. From mice with digital photo frames to ones with a digital weighing scale, I thought I've seen my fair share of multi-purpose mice, at least for this year.

Turns out I was quite wrong, because LG's LSM-100 Smart Scan Mouse is to be released later this year.

Smart Scan Mouse

It's pretty obvious from the name itself that this mouse has a bit more to it than it lets on. Aside from being a mouse, it's also a handheld scanner. Yes, you read that right: this sleek and compact mouse can replace that bulky flatbed scanner on your desk and perform scans by simply moving it back and forth across the page or picture that you want to scan. (That has got to be the most number of times I've ever used the word "scan" in one sentence.)

Smart Scan

Anyway, the LSM-100 has the capacity to scan pages that are up to A3 in size, which beats other portable scanners that are limited to smaller-sized documents in terms of what they can and can't scan. In addition to the regular left and right click buttons that you find on most computer mice, this one also has a Smart Scan button that the user presses down when doing some scans.

Click to View Embedded Video Clip

The scanned images can be saved in PNG, JPEG, TIFF, BMP, PDF, XLS or DOC format. Aside from that, the LSM-100 is also equipped with Optical Character Recognition (OCR) technology that can detect text in scanned documents and convert them into editable text. The Smart Scan, which will retail for around $150, was made available in Europe at the end of August and will be launched everywhere else shortly after.

Atari joystick

This is so cool. Now to get an iPad.

From the Technabob blog:

Atari Arcade Duo Joystick for iPad Takes on iCade

Posted: 04 Sep 2011 09:19 AM PDT

I was grabbing the latest update to Atari's Greatest Hits on my iPad yesterday, when I noticed a mention of something in the release notes. They mentioned that the game was now compatible with the "Atari® Arcade – Duo™ Powered joystick". Being the curious type, I had to investigate further, and found this.

atari_arcade_duo_powered_joystick

Turns out that there is a new iPad-compatible joystick in the works, which you can use to play all those classic arcade and Atari 2600 games in the aforementioned collection. Now you already know that there's been an arcade joystick out for a while now called the iCade, which has awesome retro arcade looks, but is also quite pricey (at $100).

The Duo stick does away with iCade's fancy arcade cabinet design, instead going for a minimal look that's likely to keep the price much lower. Due to its open-air design, it's also likely to do a better job at supporting both landscape and portrait modes than the iCade can.

While I love my iCade, I have to say that I'm totally bummed out that there aren't yet more games that take advantage of it – and I really want a trackball and spinner controller for many of the games anyhow. But if you're looking for a way to play those joystick-based classics, and don't want to break the bank, you might want to keep an eye out for the Atari Arcade Duo Joystick over at Discovery Bay Games. No word yet on a release date or pricing, but there's no way it could be as expensive as the iCade.

Starbucks CEO says 100+ businesses to withhold campaign donations over debt

AWESOME!!! I wish more corporations did this. Of course, it should't have to come down to bribes for our government to do their job. They are too busy trying to get their own perks in that they forget why they are there in the first place.

Starbucks CEO says 100+ businesses to withhold campaign donations over debt

Schultz (Kin Cheung/AP)
Heads of over 100 major companies have joined Starbucks Corp. CEO Howard Schultz in a pledge to boycott political donations until Congress and the president agree on a long-term debt and deficit plan, Schultz announced in a letter Wednesday.
"Remarkably, the initiative triggered a national dialogue and a groundswell of support," Schultz wrote, adding that in the 10 days since releasing his pledge, he "heard directly from thousands of concerned citizens and was astounded by the volume of support we received through calls, emails, social media exchanges and various other public votes of confidence."
That included over 100 business leaders who signed on to Schultz' initiative, including Myron Ullman of JC Penney, Duncan Niederauer of NYSE, and Walter Robb, co-chief executive of Whole Foods, Tim Armstrong of AOL, Mickey Drexler of J. Crew Group, and billionaire investor Pete Peterson.
Schultz earlier this month issued an internal message at Starbucks reportedly expressing dismay over "the lack of cooperation and irresponsibility among elected officials as they have put partisan agendas before the people's agenda." The response to that message led him on Aug. 15 to issue the campaign donation boycott pledge to business leaders, casting it as a strike to force politicians to act swiftly on the debt crisis and clean up what he views as their dysfunction.
Partisan gridlock in Washington was on full display this summer when Republicans in Congress and the White House sparred over raising the debt ceiling. They failed to reach an agreement until the day before the U.S. was expected to begin defaulting on its debt, causing panic and uncertainty. Ratings agencies have since downgraded the U.S. credit rating.
Schultz' pledge also asks leaders to personally take action by accelerating job creation within their own companies.
Schultz has long donated to Democrats, handing over around $100,000 over the past 15 years to Democratic candidates and committees, according to the Center for Responsive politics. The Center lists a single Republican donation by Schultz: $1,000 to Sen. John McCain in 1999.
On Wednesday, website www.upwardspiral2011.org and an accompanying Facebook page were launched to connect citizens, businesses and organizations over Schultz' pledge.

Russian Supply Spacecraft crashes

Wow, so America has nixed its program for this. This is wonderful, isn't it. Great job there Prez. Someone didn't think things through.

Russian supply spacecraft crashes after launch

Published 08:05 p.m., Wednesday, August 24, 2011

An unmanned Russian Progress spacecraft carrying nearly 3 tons of cargo to the International Space Station crashed Wednesday shortly after its launch.
The vehicle's loss has serious implications for NASA, which relies heavily on Progress vehicles to deliver supplies to the station. Moreover, Progress uses a launch system similar to that employed by the Soyuz spacecraft, which carries humans into orbit.
With the space shuttle's retirement last month, NASA uses the Soyuz craft exclusively to carry crew members to the space station.
Three astronauts, including American Dan Burbank, are scheduled to launch aboard a Soyuz vehicle on Sept. 21. Because of the investigation into Wednesday's crash, that may be delayed.
"'This has potential implications for the Soyuz launch in September," said Mike Suffredini, the Houston-based manager of the space station program.
The Progress mission, the first post-shuttle flight to the space station, launched normally at 8 a.m. CDT Wednesday, but about five minutes into the flight the vehicle shut itself down due to an "anomaly," Suffredini said.
The spacecraft did not reach orbit and later crashed in the Republic of Altai in extreme south-central Russia.
Three of the six crew members currently flying on the International Space Station - Expedition 28 commander Andrey Borisenko, Alexander Samokutyaev and Ronald Garan - were scheduled to return to Earth on Sept. 8 aboard a Soyuz already docked to the orbiting laboratory.
Their return may be delayed, as well, while Russia investigates the cause of Wednesday's accident. If future Soyuz launches are delayed long enough, the three crew members will be brought home without replacements, leaving only three astronauts on the station.
"We're perfectly able to operate the station with three crew members; we just won't get much research done," Suffredini said.
The loss of a Progress vehicle comes as several U.S. companies, including SpaceX, are racing to develop alternative supply vehicles. SpaceX's Dragon spacecraft is scheduled to launch in November and berth at the space station in a demonstration flight.
Some politicians said Wednesday's incident highlights the need for NASA to boost funding for commercial companies seeking to more quickly provide alternatives to Russian supply and crew transport vehicles.
"I am calling on General Bolden, the NASA administrator, to propose an emergency transfer of funding from unobligated balances in other programs, including the Space Launch System, to NASA's commercial crew initiative," said U.S. Rep. Dana Rohrabacher, R-Calif. "Funding should be used to speed up the efforts of the four current industry partners to develop their systems."
But NASA's initial response seemed to be to downplay their concerns about the loss of a Progress vehicle, which heretofore has had an excellent safety record.
"Logistically speaking, we're in really good shape," Suffredini said of the space station.
In a worst-case scenario, the station's residents have enough food, water and other supplies to last until March without further launches, he said. And in addition to the Soyuz vehicle, the station's European and Japanese partners have built their own supply crafts.

New Wii

Tecnabob blog:

New Wii Cuts Price, Loses Gamecube Support, Makes Yoshi Spit Apples

Posted: 19 Aug 2011 09:23 AM PDT

The Wii has remained unaltered for five years, (well, the dust collecting on mine gets thicker everyday) but now Nintendo is getting ready to launch a new version of the console.

This new version looks pretty much the same, but it has a slightly larger disc drive and the onboard buttons have some new labels. The major change however, is something that fans of backwards compatibility will not like one bit. It won't play Gamecube titles.

With no GC titles being played, you won't need those Gamecube memory card slots either, so they are gone too. No worries though, Gamecube controller ports are still there for Wii games like Super Smash Bros Brawl.

For now, this new console has been confirmed for the UK market only, but I'm sure it will make it's way to the U.S. eventually. The question is, how much will it cost? The Wii is already the cheapest you can buy, so how much cheaper does it get when you drop Gamecube compatibility?
