Special Report - Expired Condiments

by Leanne Ely, C.N.C

Dear Friends,

Ladies, are you suffering from OCS? Old Condiment Syndrome? You know what I'm talking about. Crusty ketchup bottles, icky, old Ranch dressing and ancient mustard?

We all have as many condiments as we do cleaning supplies. FlyLady says she knows what's lurking under your sinks (more cleaning supplies than a janitorial service needs). Well, I know what you have in your refrigerator doors. Fossilized condiments! And more than a busy hotdog stand in New York City needs, too!

Did you know the refrigerated shelf life for mayonnaise is two months? It is! So guess what? Today is the day you get to toss that stuff and get a new one. Listen, if you don't use it often enough, buy a smaller jar. Even though it costs more money, it really is the cheaper way to go. You don't need nasty old mayo in your fridge!

Here are some more items you probably have languishing in the doors of your fridge or way in the back:

1-Mustard. Not just the yellow kind, but Dijon, honey mustard, brown mustard and that teeny, tiny jar of gourmet mustard from the gift basket you received over the holidays with the funky taste. No one likes it, but instead of throwing it out, you put it in the fridge. Why? Toss it! Shelf life: 6-8 months in the fridge; 2 years unopened in a pantry.

2-Jams and Jellies. The other day, I pulled out a raspberry jam that had a "best used by" date of 4/5/09. YIKES! I bet you have some of those too! Time to chuck them as well! Shelf life: 1 year in the fridge; 1 year unopened in the pantry.

3-Salad Dressings. A lot of commercial salad dressings have enough preservatives in them to embalm you. However, nothing lasts forever. If they've been opened for more than 3 months in the fridge, they've gotta go too. Unopened, they'll last a year in your pantry.

4-Pickles. I think I've had the same jar of pickles in my fridge since I've had the raspberry jam. The issue for pickles is they don't last as long as jam in the fridge! Only 1-2 months opened and in the fridge. For the pantry shelf? One year unopened. Time to boogie your pickles!

5-Ketchup. I don't even want to know how old my ketchup is. Let's just say probably from the same era as the pickles and the raspberry jam. Truth is, it's only good for about 2 months in the fridge. Unopened and on the pantry shelf, it can last a year before it needs tossing.

6-Salsa and Hot Sauce. Guess what? Once your hot sauce or salsa is opened, it's good for just a month in the fridge! Don't wait for it to mold; throw it OUT! Unopened, it's good for a year on your pantry shelf.

7-Olives. Oh yes, I confess. My olives are refrigerator pals with the jam, ketchup and pickles! Out they go today...they only last a month opened in the fridge. They'll last a year unopened in your pantry though!

Well, that's quite a condemning list, isn't it? The question is how to know how old everything is? One rule of thumb if there is no date on the jar or package and if you don't remember when you opened it, it's probably a good idea to toss it.

How can you avoid Old Condiment Syndrome? By marking your condiments on the label with a Sharpie (it will hold up to the refrigeration without smudging or smearing) with the date so you know. You might want to keep this list handy too in your Control Journal so you know how long to keep these items.

Last thoughts on this and then you can go cure the OCS in your fridge: unless you have a huge family or you're an overly zealous condiment using family, it's probably best to stick with supermarket sized condiments as opposed to the jumbo sized stuff that they sell in those warehouse stores. Bigger isn't always better.

Have fun tossing!

Love,
Leanne

Recycling Meds

Medication Recycling is the way to go if you have expired OTC meds or prescriptions. We rarely finish a bottle of pain reliever.

Make sure you dispose of them in a safe manner.

Do not flush them down the toilet. It goes directly back to our water supply. We have enough chemicals to worry about.

Anyway that is my Earth Day tip of the day. Which I just realized I missed by a couple of hours. lol

Such is life.

Info - How Massive data breach affects you

Massive data breach affects you

4/22/2011

Q. I read your Privacy Tip about the recent massive Epsilon data breach. I also got email notifications from companies I deal with online. Now, however, I received an email directly from Epsilon asking me to download a program. Is this a legitimate email?
-David from Uniontown, PA, listens to my national radio show on WPGB 104.7 FM

A. This data breach reported by a company by the name of Epsilon keeps getting more and more interesting. Epsilon handled the email marketing campaigns for major companies like Chase, Best Buy, Target and others. More than 2,500 companies use Epsilon to manage their client email lists.
If you bought anything from any of these companies or registered your email address with them, your name and email address could have been compromised. Millions of people have been affected.
Until recently, the main result of this breach was increased spam. Some people also received basic phishing email from online swindlers. That isn't very surprising.
Now, Epsilon says if you registered your name and email address at a GlaxoSmithKline Website for certain prescription and nonprescription drugs, watch out. The bad guys have your name, email address, and they also know what drugs you might be taking.
So, if you registered at the Beano Web site, some criminal is having a gas at your expense.
Things get worse. Hackers recently released a devious new scam. It is an email claiming to be from Epsilon. The email has a link to something called the "Epsilon Secure Connect Tool."
Clicking the link takes you to a very professional-looking Website. You are given the option of downloading the tool. It is supposed to confirm whether your email address was stolen.
However, the program is actually a virus that will infect your computer. It can steal personal information or install other malware. You don't want to download it.
Scams like this are going to become more common. Fortunately, you can protect yourself. You just have to follow some simple rules.
You'll want to make sure your computer has security software installed. It also needs to be up-to-date. Grab some great free security software at my Security Center.
You need to be wary when dealing with email. Don't click on email links to visit a company's site. Open your browser and type in the address manually.
Be sure to verify that the address is to a legitimate company site. You can do this with a quick Google search. Search for the company listed in the email and verify its Website address.
Never respond to an email with personal information. No company will ask you for personal information that way. Everything you need to do can be done on the company site. Of course, you can always call the company and talk to a representative.
Don't download email attachments. Again, companies never send unsolicited attachments to customers. It is most likely a scam or malicious program.
Hackers move fast when situations like this occur. You want as much warning and information as possible. If you don't receive my weekly newsletter email, you can sign up here. It's free and has lots of excellent and timely security information.
Email is still a vital form of communication. Here are some tricks for getting the most out of it:

Daily Quotes/Prayer - 04/05/2011

The Lord is far from the wicked, But He
hears the prayer of the righteous.
        ( Proverbs 15:29 *NKJV )
We may pray that God will handle a problem for us, or to
fulfill a dream we have, while never letting it go for Him to handle.
We instead take it back and try to handle it on our own.

We may then even put all of our trust in another to solve it for
us as well.  Now it is written;
It is better to trust in the
Lord than to put confidence in man.
                                            ( Psalms 118:8 )

So the next time that you ask God to handle something for you,
leave it in God's capable hands, and;
Rest in the Lord, and
wait patiently for Him; ( Psalms 37:7 )
Do not
pull it back again and try to handle it without Him.

Now this reminds me of a poem that I often read before I pray
for something, and I will share it with you right now.  I hope that
you will enjoy it as much as I do.

                                  Broken Dreams

                                As children bring
                                their broken toys
with tears for us to mend,
                          I brought my broken dreams
                                        to God
                          because He was my friend!

                                But then instead
                                   of leaving Him
                             in peace to work alone,
                                  I hung around
                               and tried to help
                                   with ways
                               that were my own.

At last I snatched them back
                                     and cried,
"How can you be so slow?"
                               "My child," He said
                                "What could I do?
                              You never did let go."

Tangled

I love this song and this movie.
Watching it now.
Way to go Disney!

Mother Gothel:
You want to go outside? Why, Rapunzel...!
Look at you, as fragile as a flower
Still a little sapling, just a sprout
You know why we stay up in this tower

Rapunzel:
I know but...

Mother Gothel:
That's right, to keep you safe and sound, dear
Guess I always knew this day was coming
Knew that soon you'd want to leave the nest
Soon, but not yet

Rapunzel:
But --

Mother Gothel:
Shh!
Trust me, pet
Mother knows best
Mother knows best
Listen to your mother
It's a scary world out there
Mother knows best
One way or another
Something will go wrong, I swear
Ruffians, thugs
Poison ivy, quicksand
Cannibals and snakes
The plague

Rapunzel:
No!

Mother Gothel:
Yes!

Rapunzel:
But --

Mother Gothel:
Also large bugs
Men with pointy teeth, and
Stop, no more, you'll just upset me
Mother's right here
Mother will protect you
Darling, here's what I suggest
Skip the drama
Stay with mama
Mother knows best
Go ahead, get trampled by a rhino
Go ahead, get mugged and left for dead
Me, I'm just your mother, what do I know?
I only bathed and changed and nursed you
Go ahead and leave me, I deserve it
Let me die alone here, be my guest
When it's too late
You'll see, just wait
Mother knows best
Mother knows best
Take it from your mumsy
On your own, you won't survive
Sloppy, underdressed
Immature, clumsy
Please, they'll eat you up alive
Gullible, nave
Positively grubby
Ditzy and a bit, well, hmm vague
Plus, I believe
Gettin' kinda chubby
I'm just saying 'cause I wuv you
Mother understands
Mother's here to help you
All I have is one request
Rapunzel?

Rapunzel:
Yes?

Mother Gothel:
Don't ever ask to leave this tower again.

Rapunzel:
Yes, Mother.

Mother Gothel:
I love you very much, dear.

Rapunzel:
I love you more.

Mother Gothel:
I love you most.
Don't forget it
You'll regret it
Mother knows best

Jesus said; "Let the little children come
to me, and do not hinder them, for the
kingdom of God belongs to such as these."
            ( MARK 10:14 *NIV )

Now in keeping with our Saturday tradition I will share a
laugh or two with you this morning. The following message
was sent to me by one of our subscriber's, and I hope that
you will enjoy the message as much as I do.

                        "Why God Made Moms "

( The following answers were given by Elementary School
Children to the following questions )

Question----"Why Did God Make Mothers?""

 The answers:
 1. She's the only one who knows where the scotch tape is.

 2. Mostly to clean the house.

 3. To help us out of there when we were getting born.

Q-----"How Did God Make Mothers?"

 1. He used dirt, just like for the rest of us.

 2. Magic plus super powers and a lot of stirring.

 3. God made my mom just the same like he made me. He just
 used bigger parts.

Q----"What Ingredients Are Mother's Made Of ?"

 1. God makes mothers out of clouds and angel hair and
everything nice in the world and one dab of mean.

 2. They had to get their start from men's bones. Then they
He mostly used string I think.

Q----"Why Did God Give You Your Mother And not Some Other
  Mom?"

 1. We're related.

 2. God knew she likes me a lot more than other people's
  moms like me.

Q----"What Kind Of Little Girl Was Your Mom?"

 1. My mom has always been my mom and none of that other
 stuff...

 2. I don't know because I wasn't there, but my guess would be
 pretty bossy.

 3. They say she used to be nice.

Q----"What Did Mom Need To Know About Dad Before She
    Married  Him?"

 1. His last name.

 2. She had to know his background. Like is he a crook?  Does
he get drunk on beer? Does he make at least $800 a year?  Did
he say NO to drugs and YES to chores?

Q----"Why Did Your Mom Marry Your Dad ?"

 1. My dad makes the best spaghetti in the world. And my mom
 eats a lot.

 2. She got too old to do anything else with him.

 3. My grandma says that mom didn't have her thinking cap on.

Q----"Who's The Boss At Your House?"

 1. Mom doesn't want to be boss, but she has to because dad's
 such a goofball

 2. Mom. You can tell by room inspection. She sees the stuff
 under the bed.

 3. I guess Mom is, but only because she has a lot more to do
 than dad.

Q----"What's The Difference Between Moms And Dads?"

 1. Moms work at work & work at home, & dads just go to work
 at work.

 2. Moms know how to talk to teachers without scaring them.

 3. Dads are taller & stronger, but moms have all the real power
'cause that's who you got to ask if you want to sleep over at
 your friend's.

Q----"What Does Your Mom Do In Her Spare Time?"

 1. Mothers don't do spare time.

 2. To hear her tell it, she pays bills all day long.

Q----"What Would It Take To Make Your Mom Perfect?"

 1. On the inside she's already perfect. Outside, I think some
 kind of plastic surgery.

 2. Diet. You know, her hair. I'd diet, maybe blue.

Q----"If You Could Change One Thing About Your Mom What
  Would It Be?"

 1. She has this weird thing about me keeping my room clean.
 I'd get rid of that.

 2. I'd make my mom smarter. Then she would know it was my
sister who did it and not me.

Star Tours: Where in the Galaxy Are We Going?

Posted: 01 Apr 2011 11:57 AM PDT

It won't be long now before Star Tours re-launches and "The Adventures Continue" at both Walt Disney World Resort in Florida and Disneyland Resort in California! But where in the galaxy are we going?

We know a lot of you have been wondering and asking, and today we are happy to reveal the final destinations you can expect to visit when Star Tours resumes service. You already know we're going to Tatooine for the Boonta Eve Podrace and to Coruscant.

Star Tours: Where in the Galaxy Are We Going?

Additional destinations include a visit to the beautiful planet of Naboo, a rare tour of the Wookiee planet of Kashyyyk, and a trip to the icy planet Hoth (seen above in a still image from Star Wars: Episode V The Empire Strikes Back).

Of course, no Star Tours adventure would be complete without an unexpected visit to the Death Star, this time above the planet Geonosis.

In addition, we'll be departing from a spectacular new Spaceport, created just for the new Star Tours voyages.

Star Tours: Where in the Galaxy Are We Going?

As revealed earlier, these destinations will be combined in more than 50 different story adventures, so you'll never know where the Force will take you!

Pook-A-Looz Promotion at Disney Parks

I first learned of Pook-A-Looz at the D23 Expo in September 2009. There was a huge display of these handcrafted creations which I thought looked adorable. Originally introduced by Disney Consumer Products, Pook-A-Looz plush were designed to capture the personalities of Disney characters in a fun and offbeat way. Dara Trujillo first told you about these plush characters arriving at Disney Parks last April. In the article, she mentioned there were some Pook-A-Looz plush developed specifically for Disney Parks. I recently spoke with Denise Edelmaier, product developer for dolls and plush, about the development of these items.

Pook-A-Looz Promotion at Disney Parks

"We worked closely with Disney Consumer Products to make the Disney Parks Pook-A-Looz plush since they were the creators of the brand," explained Denise. "The idea was to introduce characters that were specific to Disney Parks such as Figment or the Yeti. Monty Maldovan from Disney Design Group provided the Disney Consumer Products team with reference images. In turn, they designed the plush."

Pook-A-Looz Promotion at Disney Parks

There were a total of six Pook-A-Looz developed for Disney Parks including Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, Sorcerer Mickey, Band Leader Mickey, Yeti and Figment. The latter two were made as 8-inch plush rather than 12-inch plush. Denise was excited to share that more unique Pook-A-Looz are coming later in Summer 2011.

"The response at Disney Parks for the Pook-A-Looz has been wonderful," exclaimed Denise. "We have several additional designs on the way including Pirate Mickey, Safari Mickey and two Pook-A-Looz plush for the 40th Anniversary of Walt Disney World. They will be arriving at Disney Parks later in 2011."

Pook-A-Looz Promotion at Disney Parks

The above image is the artwork for the 40th Anniversary Pook-A-Looz. According to Monty, their outfits were inspired by the outfits worn by Mickey and Minnie on October 1, 1971, the day that Walt Disney World Resort opened to guests.

Denise also shared some very exciting news about something I'm calling the perfect Pook-A-Looz plush promotion (try saying that three times fast – I love alliteration!). Now through May 11, 2011, at select locations at Disneyland Resort and Walt Disney World Resort, select Pook-A-Looz plush are 40% off.** It's a pretty awesome deal, and a perfect way to jump start (or complete) a Pook-A-Looz collection.
