R2D2 candy tin

From the Technabob blog:
Another must have.

R2-D2 Mint Candies: Altoid-Droid

Posted: 24 Oct 2011 07:46 PM PDT

So why is it that every time I think that all possible ideas for new Star Wars merchandise have been 100% exhausted, someone comes out with yet another product which nobody ever thought about. Case in point, these R2-D2 mints.

r2-d2_mint_candy_tin

Now this particular R2 unit seems to have flipped his lid, but that's only so you can get at the minty goodness inside, and not because he has a bad motivator unit. It's hard to tell from the picture, but each mint is also shaped like a little R2-D2 too. It's too bad that there's no matching C-3PO candy tin, because they'd look pretty good standing alongside each other on your desk. Oh well, one droid is better than no droids, I suppose.

On the other hand, they will be offering Stormtrooper,Darth Vader and Death Star mints, which freshen your breath with the full power of the Dark Side of the Force.

The R2-D2 mint candy tin is available for pre-order over at Play.com for £3.49 (~$6 USD)

Pumpkin Chocolate Chip Muffins - Dine, Dish, Delish

Whenever I bake, which is rarely, I always try to take shortcuts or tweak the recipe to make it vegan. It usually fails. But I do have one goof-proof method to make an easy boxed cake mix even easier and much healthier: canned pumpkin. If you add one 14 ounce can of pumpkin to one box of cake, muffin, or cupcake mix, omitting the eggs and oil it calls for, you get a perfectly baked good, without the added fat, and with some serious vitamin A and fiber to boot. And since most mixes are vegan to start, this substitution keeps the sweet treats vegan, without making them dense or gritty like some vegan substitutes.
I work as the dietitian at the Boston Conservatory where I also teach the freshmen dance class' nutrition course. This year I have a full class of 37 students. I made a promise to them on the first day of class that if I didn't learn their names by the end of September, I'd bake for them. They were pleased, I was not. I don't like baking, so the thought of making 37 of anything baked encouraged me to learn their names, stat. Which I did not do. I think I came pretty close, but I'm terrible with names. I have a condition. And when you have multiple sets of the same named students, it gets confusing! Fortunately, my sneaky baking trick is super easy.
Ingredients:
1 box Trader Joe's pumpkin muffin/bread mix, or any vanilla cake/muffin mix
1 14.5-oz can pumpkin
2 cups dark chocolate chips
Preheat the oven to 400 degrees, or according to your boxed mix's directions. Combine dry mix, pumpkin and chocolate chips in a large bowl and hand mix, or use a stand mixer. I was so excited to use my Kitchen Aid mixer that I received for our wedding – the quintessential wedding gift that I'm determined to get good use out of!
Scoop mix into muffin tin about 3/4 of the way full, and bake according to the package directions (or a few minutes less if you have a finicky oven).
They came out perfectly: light and fluffy with pumpkin pie spice flavor shining through, along side the ooey gooey chocolate chips. They're the perfect treat to ask for forgiveness for my 37 nameless (to me) students. I'm working on it…I swear.

CHICKEN, BLACK BEAN WITH SALSA SOUP

by ERIN, THE $5 DINNER MOM on OCTOBER 29, 2010
black bean salsa chicken so Chicken, Black Bean with Salsa Soup
So I could have named this recipe a number of things.
Chicken Taco Soup
Chicken, Salsa and Double Bean Soup
Tex-Mex Chicken Soup
Clear out the Pantry Chicken Soup
And in the end I settled on Chicken, Black Bean with Salsa Soup.
(Which definitely hurts the feelings of the red beans…they feel totally left out.)

Chicken, Black Bean with Salsa Soup

Ingredients

  • 3 chicken breasts, diced ($2.56)
  • 1 Tbsp canola or vegetable oil ($.05)
  • 2 Tbsp homemade taco seasoning ($.10)
  • 2 cups cooked black beans ($.40)
  • 2 cups cooked red beans ($.40)
  • 2 cups homemade chicken broth (free)
  • (About 2-3 cups water…depending on how thick you like your soup)
  • 2 cups frozen corn ($.88)
  • 1 cup store bought salsa ($.50) On sale for $1
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Couple pinchfuls of cheese, optional ($.25)
  • 1 avocado, sliced for garnish ($1)

Directions

  1. In a large saucepan or Dutch oven, saute the diced chicken breast in the oil with the taco seasoning mixed in. (If you have cooked and shredded chicken, that will work too!)
  2. Once the chicken has cooked through, add the cooked black beans, the cooked red beans, the broth and water.  Stir in the frozen corn, no need to thaw, as well as the salsa.  Bring to a boil, then reduce heat to medium low and let simmer for 15-20 minutes. (Time it so that the cooking scents are at the best when your spouse walks in the door from work!) Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  3. Ladle into bowls and top with a pinchful of shredded cheese and a slice or two of fresh avocado.
  4. Serve Chicken, Black Bean with Salsa Soup with Cheese and Avocado Slices.

And just like I said the other day, "why buy a jar of spice that you only need 1-2 teaspoons of when you can mix up your own with what you've got already?!"

Cake Recipes from Hungry Girl

Cake Mix + Diet Soda
PER SERVING (1 piece, 1/12th of cake): 171 calories, 3.25g fat, 301mg sodium, 34g carbs, <0.5g fiber, 19g sugars, 1.5g protein -- PointsPlus® value 5*
Ingredients:One 18.25-oz. box moist-style cake mix
One 12-oz. can diet soda

Directions:
Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

Combine ingredients in a large bowl. Whisk thoroughly and transfer to a baking pan sprayed with nonstick spray; bake in the oven until a knife inserted into the center comes out clean. (Refer to cake-mix box for pan size and approximate bake time.)

MAKES 12 SERVINGS

Best Flavor Combo: Yellow cake mix + diet cream soda. Runners-up include lemon cake mix + diet lemon-lime soda and devil's food cake mix + diet cherry cola.

The Texture: Moist and light.

The Taste: Pretty darn impressive! However, if you're sensitive to the sweetener in diet soda, you may notice a slight aftertaste... especially if you use cola of any kind.

Cake Mix + Canned Pure Pumpkin
PER SERVING (1 piece, 1/12th of cake): 183 calories, 3.5g fat, 301mg sodium, 37g carbs, 1.25g fiber, 20.5g sugars, 2g protein -- PointsPlus® value 5*

Ingredients:One 18.25-oz. box moist-style cake mix
One 15-oz. can pure pumpkin

Directions:
Preheat oven to 400 degrees.

Combine ingredients in a large bowl. Mix thoroughly -- batter will be VERY thick -- and transfer to a baking pan sprayed with nonstick spray; bake in the oven until a knife inserted into the center comes out clean. (Refer to cake-mix box for pan size and approximate bake time.)

MAKES 12 SERVINGS

Best Flavor: Devil's food cake mix is CLEARLY a classic choice. (Hello?!Yum Yum Brownie Muffins!) But spice cake mix... WOW. Yellow and white cake mixes, sadly, do not work as well.

The Texture: Thick and dense in the BEST possible way. Brownie-like, in the case of the devil's food; the spice cake reminded us of pumpkin bread!

The Taste: No one would ever guess this is guilt-free in any way. It's delicious!

Cake Mix + Fat-Free Liquid Egg Substitute
PER SERVING (1 piece, 1/12th of cake): 181 calories, 3.25g fat, 337mg sodium, 34.5g carbs, <0.5g fiber, 19.5g sugars, 3.5g protein -- PointsPlus® value 5*

Ingredients:
One 18.25-oz. box moist-style cake mix
1 cup fat-free liquid egg substitute (like Egg Beaters Original)

Directions:Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

Combine ingredients in a large bowl and add 1 cup water. Whisk thoroughly and transfer to a baking pan sprayed with nonstick spray; bake in the oven until a knife inserted into the center comes out clean. (Refer to cake-mix box for pan size and approximate bake time.)

MAKES 12 SERVINGS

Best Flavor: Egg sub is like the little black dress of cake companions; it goes well with everything.

The Texture: The first time we made this, we used only 1/4 cup of water; it was a little dry and dense, but it reminded us of pound cake, which isn't a bad thing. With a full cup of water, it came out light and fluffy. It had a more substantial, cake-like consistency than the applesauce and soda versions, but it wasn't quite as moist.

The Taste: Good! But it's not our favorite. That one's up next...

Cake Mix + Fat-Free Greek Yogurt
PER SERVING (1 piece, 1/12th of cake): 180 calories, 3.25g fat, 306mg sodium, 34.5g carbs, <0.5g fiber, 20g sugars, 3.5g protein -- PointsPlus® value 5*

Ingredients:One 18.25-oz. box moist-style cake mix
1 cup fat-free plain Greek yogurt (like Fage Total 0%)

Directions:Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

Combine ingredients in a large bowl and add 1 cup water. Whisk thoroughly and transfer to a baking pan sprayed with nonstick spray; bake in the oven until a knife inserted into the center comes out clean. (Refer to cake-mix box for pan size and approximate bake time.)

MAKES 12 SERVINGS

Best Flavor: Devil's food cake mix. Hands down.

The Texture: The word "velvety" comes to mind... Super moist and decadent! Kind of like a brownie-cake hybrid.

The Taste: YUMMY! Everyone who tried this loved it. There wasn't any yogurt taste at all... just pure cake-tastic deliciousness!

LTM 22. The Art of Listening

22. The Art of Listening
Being a good listener is one of the most important skills to master if you
want to build meaningful relationships or advance your career. When you
listen intentionally, you demonstrate your interest in what is being said
and your respect for the individual saying it. Thoughtful listening is a
magnetic force that draws people to you, building trust and rapport along
the way.
Have you ever talked to someone and noticed that he or she wasn’t really
listening to you? How did it make you feel? Unimportant? Disrespected?
Ignored? Remember those feelings and work diligently to ensure that
people never feel the same way when conversing with you.
I always value the lessons I learn from my role models. My dad’s
expertise in this area has been a shining example. He is the best listener I
know. Everyone who meets him forms an instant bond with him, and I’m
convinced the Number 1 reason for this immediate connection is his
heartfelt and sincere interest in others, demonstrated through attentive
listening.
Ten Valuable Tips
1. Make eye contact. The first step in being an intentional listener is
to make eye contact with people while they are talking. Direct eye
contact demonstrates genuine interest in the person and the
conversation.
2. Be present. I must admit that sometimes my wife accuses me of
not being present when she is talking, even though I am looking at
Improving Your Life One Thing at a Time. 65.
her. Perhaps I have that ―The lights are on, but no one is home‖
look. When listening, try not to let your mind wander; instead,
focus your attention on the person and what’s being said. Be
aware that people do notice when you are not paying attention.
3. Don’t send signals of your impatience. When you are listening,
don’t give any clues that you are ready to respond. Don’t point
your finger, open your mouth, or fidget. When I see that people
are waiting on ―pins and needles‖ to respond, I have a sense they
are more concerned with how they are going to respond than with
listening to what I have to say.
4. Don’t interrupt. One of the most prevalent problems in our
society is not allowing people to finish a thought without
interrupting them. If you start talking at the same time someone
else is trying to finish his or her thought, stop and say, ―I’m sorry,
please continue.” Then let them finish before responding. Even if
what you have to say is important or it’s an answer to the question
they raised, show them your respect by letting them finish.
5. Use the two-second rule. Even though you may feel the urge to
present your viewpoint, allowing whatever pops into your head to
pop out of your mouth is disrespectful to the speaker. During all
of your conversations, wait two seconds after the person stops
speaking before you respond. Often people are just pausing to
gather their thoughts before continuing the conversation. This is
especially important during phone conversations because you
can’t make eye contact or see facial expressions. If you find
yourself talking at the same time someone else is talking, remind
yourself to use the two-second rule.

6. Show a sincere interest. This is one area where my dad stands
out from most people. When he listens he really cares about what
is being said, even if it’s a subject that doesn’t concern him. This
is his way of demonstrating that what people say is important and
that he values them as individuals.
7. Listen for the message within the message. Another one of my
dad’s skills is to listen for the subtle message hidden in the
conversation. Dad says that most people are looking for
encouragement, answers, or insights to the subjects they discuss.
By listening intently he is able to grasp the topic, allowing him to
engage and connect on a deeper level.
8. Don’t change the subject. When you are engaged in a
conversation, don’t change the subject unless the discussion is
finished. This behavior is obvious in small group settings,
business meetings, and social encounters. If you change the
subject prematurely, you demonstrate a lack of interest in the
discussion and indicate that you think what you have to say is
more important.
9. Respond by asking questions. Asking questions during a
conversation shows a sincere interest in the topic. My dad
believes that most people operate at the feeling level rather than
the thinking level. His favorite question is to ask people how they
feel about the subject they have raised.
10. Don’t start a side conversation. When you are part of a group
discussion, never start a second conversation with someone near
you. Even if the speaker isn’t including you when sharing eye

contact with others in the group, don’t allow the speaker’s lack of
courtesy to prevent you from being a good listener.
LTM Challenge
My guess is that, if you are like me, you believe you know the right thing
to do and you think you’re a decent listener. Can you get better? Will you
commit to showing you care about people by incorporating these ten tips
into your daily routine? Listening is one of those areas where we can
always improve.
Being a good listener requires an intentional effort
and a sincere interest in other people.
It is a skill worth mastering.
